A Few Tips
- Come up with a reasonable and comprehensive budget which includes insurance and road tax.
- Use the internet to your advantage.
- Go into the dealership knowing what price you want to pay, what they will have paid and what they stand to make of selling the car to you. These are very useful things to know when haggling your final offer.
- Buy at the end of the month, when dealers are in a good mood and have probably already hit their sales target. If a local salesman has already passed his target of selling 20 Citroen DS4 models in a month then he's probably more likely to let another one go for a little less to boost his figures.
- Check out a few different dealerships.
- One good method is; upon settling on your target price (worked out using your research of the invoice price and true market value etc) send an email to a number of dealerships of whom you would be willing to travel to with your target price, your reasoning and let them know that you know that they are still making money. Now wait for a response. This way you can get a good idea of which dealerships are reasonable and pleasant to deal with before even leaving your house.
- If you’re going to be doing any part exchanging, get to know the value of the used car your trading in, based on the cars depreciation, age and mileage.
